Power of attorney: drafting, translation, notarisation and apostille

A power of attorney lets someone else act on your behalf: sell or buy property, accept an inheritance, register a vehicle or represent you at a bank or a government office. When one party is abroad, the power of attorney must be translated and properly certified to be valid.

The two most common situations

  • You live abroad and need a POA for a matter in Serbia: we prepare a bilingual text that you sign before a notary or consulate in your country of residence, then translate and prepare it for use in Serbia.
  • You live in Serbia and need a POA for use abroad: we prepare the text, arrange signature certification by a notary, the apostille or legalisation, and a certified translation into the destination country's language.

Typical uses

  • Buying, selling and registering real estate in the cadastre
  • Probate proceedings and renouncing an inheritance
  • Registering, selling and deregistering vehicles
  • Representation before banks, the tax administration, the business register (APR) or courts
  • Obtaining documents (extracts, certificates) on your behalf

Why a bilingual POA is practical

A bilingual power of attorney contains the Serbian and foreign-language text side by side. Both the signatory and the authority receiving it understand the same text, and a separate translation after certification can often be avoided. Some authorities still require a court interpreter's translation, so we check this in advance.

Please note

We do not give legal advice on the underlying transaction. If you need a legal opinion, we recommend consulting a lawyer; we are happy to translate, certify and prepare the POA text they draft for use abroad.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sign the POA at a Serbian consulate abroad?

Yes, Serbian embassies and consulates can certify signatures on powers of attorney. A POA certified this way is used in Serbia without an apostille.

How long is a power of attorney valid?

If no term is stated, it is valid until revoked, but many banks and authorities only accept recently issued POAs. Check the institution's requirements.
