Getting married in Serbia as a foreigner: documents and interpreter
To marry a foreign national in Serbia, the registry office requires the foreign partner's documents to be translated into Serbian and properly certified, and if the foreign partner does not speak Serbian, a court interpreter must be present at the ceremony. We prepare the documents and provide the interpreter. If you are marrying abroad, we obtain and translate the Serbian documents.
Documents typically required from the foreign partner
- Birth certificate
- Certificate of no impediment to marriage (single status)
- Valid passport
- Final divorce judgment or the former spouse's death certificate, if previously married
Foreign documents generally need an apostille or legalisation and then a translation by a court interpreter in Serbia. The exact list and validity periods should be confirmed with the registry office where you book the wedding, as requirements can differ.
Interpreter at the wedding
If one partner does not speak Serbian, a court interpreter translates the ceremony and the partners' declarations. The interpreter is booked in advance for the exact date and time, so we recommend contacting us as soon as you have your date.
Marrying abroad
If you are marrying in Germany, Austria, Italy or another country, we obtain the Serbian birth certificate, citizenship certificate and certificate of no impediment, apostille them and translate them into the language of the country of marriage. Afterwards we can translate the foreign marriage certificate so the marriage can be registered in Serbia.

How far in advance should I book the interpreter?
As early as possible, and at least a few weeks before the wedding for common languages. For rarer languages and weekend dates, allow more time.
Do I need to translate the foreign marriage certificate for Serbia?
Yes. To register a marriage concluded abroad in the Serbian civil register you need the foreign certificate with an apostille or legalisation and its certified translation.
